Your Site Is Loading Slowly - Let's Fix It
A slow website drives visitors away and hurts your business. Before you panic, here's a step-by-step checklist to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.
1. Check Your Resource Usage in cPanel
Log into cPanel and look at the Resource Usage section (or CPU and Concurrent Connection Usage depending on your theme). This shows you if your account is hitting its limits. If you're maxing out CPU, memory, or inodes, that's your problem right there.
- High CPU usage usually means a script or plugin is working too hard.
- High inode count means you have too many small files (cache folders, temp files, emails).
- If you're hitting limits consistently, you may need to upgrade or clean up.
2. Check for Large Files
Big files = slow loading. Go to cPanel > File Manager and check for:
- Uncompressed images (photos should be under 200KB each).
- Large backup files sitting in your public_html folder.
- Old log files that have grown massive.
- Video files uploaded directly to your site (upload to YouTube or Vimeo instead, then embed).
Use the Size column in File Manager to sort files from biggest to smallest. Anything over 5MB that isn't a PDF or download should be compressed or removed.
3. Enable CloudFlare
Yourcheaphost.com includes CloudFlare on all plans. CloudFlare caches your site on servers around the world, so visitors load a cached copy instead of hitting your server every time. This cuts load times in half (or more) for most sites.
To enable it:
- Go to cPanel and find the CloudFlare section.
- Log in with your CloudFlare account (or create one - it's free).
- Set the orange cloud icon to orange (proxied) for your domain.
That's it. Your site is now behind CloudFlare's CDN.
4. Consider an Upgrade
If you've cleaned up files, enabled CloudFlare, and your site is still slow, your plan may just be too small for your traffic. Check your visitor stats in cPanel. If you're getting more visitors than your plan supports, you'll feel it.
We have plans with more CPU, RAM, and IO priority. You can upgrade anytime from your billing portal. Shoot us a ticket if you're not sure which plan fits - we'll help you pick.
