Your password is the first thing that protects your hosting account and website.
What Makes a Strong Password
- At least 12 characters - longer is better.
- A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
- Not a dictionary word, name, or common phrase.
- Unique - do not reuse a password across different sites.
Use cPanel's Password Generator
When you create or change a password in cPanel, click the Password Generator button to make a strong, random password. Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass) to save it.
Good Security Habits
- Change your passwords every 3 to 6 months.
- Never share your password over email or chat.
- Use a different admin password for your CMS (WordPress, etc.) than your cPanel password.
- Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) when available.
- Log out of cPanel and your client area when using shared computers.
