Strong Passwords and Keeping Your Account Safe Print

  • 0

Your password is the first thing that protects your hosting account and website.

What Makes a Strong Password

  • At least 12 characters - longer is better.
  • A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
  • Not a dictionary word, name, or common phrase.
  • Unique - do not reuse a password across different sites.

Use cPanel's Password Generator

When you create or change a password in cPanel, click the Password Generator button to make a strong, random password. Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass) to save it.

Good Security Habits

  • Change your passwords every 3 to 6 months.
  • Never share your password over email or chat.
  • Use a different admin password for your CMS (WordPress, etc.) than your cPanel password.
  • Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) when available.
  • Log out of cPanel and your client area when using shared computers.
